Our Roots

THE EVANGELICAL FREE CHURCH is a Christian denomination that traces its roots to the 16th century Protestant Reformation in Europe. In its concrete historical form, this denomination began in the Scandinavian countries like Sweden, Norway, and Denmark and later spread to America and Canada.

The Birth of EFCSS

EFCSS is an association of churches joined together for a common purpose: to reach out to lost souls in South Sudan and beyond. The Evangelical Free Church of South Sudan movement traces back to 25/10/1993, when God birthed the vision through four core pastors from Africa Inland Church Sudan who felt called to start a new ministry in Nairobi, Kenya.

These four key pastors joined together in prayer and adopted the name Evangelical Free Church of Sudan after reading a magazine that contained information about the Evangelical Free Church of America. They formed a leadership team headed by Rev. Carlo Kolong and strategically assigned themselves to four locations within Southern Sudan and refugee camps in North Kenya and Uganda for evangelization and church planting.

Since then, the church has experienced great growth and expanded throughout Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda refugee camps, and Kenya, with over 54 local churches nationwide.

Our Identity

Evangelical refers to our commitment to the proclamation of the gospel and to the authority of Scriptures as being inerrant in the original manuscripts and the only good and sufficient guide to our faith and practice.

The term Free refers to our form of church government, which means that our local churches are free to govern themselves—a congregational form of governance. EFCSS churches depend upon the active participation of pastors and lay people in the decisions and direction of the local churches. We are autonomous and interdependent, united in a common commitment to God’s evangel—the gospel of Jesus Christ, who died and rose again to give us eternal life—and free from state control.
